They may not realize, however, that these tasty handouts could be harmful.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lure the treat givers away from the family table and lead them to a tray of safe-for-pets, holiday treats instead. Once the treats are gone, they\u2019ll know that puppy has had enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Holiday Foods Can Harm the Family Dog?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fatty, toxic, and dangerous foods adorn the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/gobble-this-not-that-having-a-pet-friendly-thanksgiving\/\">Thanksgiving<\/a> table and should not be given to your pet. Avoid giving your furry friends any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turkey skin and bones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stuffing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gravy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cranberry sauce (sugary)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buttered and salted foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garlic in all forms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Onions in all forms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Popular fall seasonings such as nutmeg and sage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grapes and raisins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chocolate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ice Cream<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Macadamia nuts and walnuts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alcohol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it\u2019s full of fat, seasoned with salt (or most other seasonings), or sweetened with sugar or xylitol, don\u2019t offer a taste to your dog. It could mean a trip to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/is-there-a-pet-emergency\/\">emergency vet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Human Foods Are Safe For Dogs?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t be a sad little puppy; there\u2019s lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/all-the-yum-healthy-treats-for-pets\/\">human holiday food<\/a> that\u2019s good for you dogs. A note to your humans, though: a little bit is enough!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogtopia.com\/greenwood\/8-thanksgiving-treats-you-can-share-with-your-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">festive foods<\/a> are safe in moderation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unseasoned, cooked meats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carrots, celery, green beans, and more! Lots of fresh vegetables are good for your dog in small amounts. Cooked veggies are easier to eat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many fruits\u2014apples, peaches, pears, blueberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, and bananas, to name just a few.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small bites of cheese<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweet potatoes\u2014no salt or butter or seasonings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pumpkin\u2014but not pumpkin pie. There\u2019s too much fat, and spices and could be toxic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooked potatoes are okay\u2014never raw, seasoned, salted, or buttered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help Control Your Dog\u2019s Weight With Smaller Portions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though all your guests may overeat on delicious Thanksgiving foods, your pets don\u2019t have to. Make up a tray of portion-controlled healthy treats for your dog and share throughout the day. Don\u2019t make so many that your dog could gain weight, or his tummy could be upset. These are healthy amounts for pets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A teaspoon of pumpkin mixed with a small chunk of cooked potato<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A quarter-inch cube of cheese matched with a bite of cooked turkey (unseasoned)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three slightly cooked green beans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fruit slices\u2014not too big!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small carrot and celery sticks dipped in peanut butter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Dog Got Into the Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, and Gravy. If you suspect your dog is sick, get him to the vet as soon as possible. Call first, so they know you\u2019re on the way! Extreme symptoms may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disoriented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscle weakness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pancreatitis is indicated by posture\u2014head down, hindquarters up.
