Since they can\u2019t physically tell us when something is wrong, it\u2019s up to us to recognize the signs of an issue. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/\">Bowman Veterinary Hospital<\/a> is here to help you understand when to call the vet for dental issues and when it can wait.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warning Signs of Pet Dental Disease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you think that you would recognize the early signs of an oral problem in your pet?&nbsp; Here are the most common tip-offs that your pet\u2019s chompers might need some extra attention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/stinky-dog-breath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Halitosis<\/a><\/strong> \u2014&nbsp; This is a fancy term for dog breath. A stinky odor often indicates infection somewhere. You may not be able to see the source, but if you can smell it, it is a problem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drooling<\/strong> \u2014&nbsp; Excessive drooling can be a big tip off that something isn\u2019t right inside of its mouth. Pain inside of the mouth may make your pet hesitant to swallow, which can result in excessive salivation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yellow or brown discoloration along the gum line<\/strong> \u2014 Check out your dog or cat\u2019s teeth. Any hard buildup you notice is tartar. Tartar harbors bacteria along the gumline, resulting in periodontal disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Red, inflamed gums<\/strong> \u2014 If the gum tissue along the edge of the tooth appears puffy and red, your pet is likely suffering from gingivitis. This is a problem that needs to be addressed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Broken, loose, or missing teeth<\/strong> \u2014&nbsp; Broken teeth can be painful and lead to a tooth root abscess, while missing or loose teeth are often a sign of ongoing disease within the mouth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trouble eating or decreased appetite<\/strong> \u2014 By the time you are seeing these signs related to dental disease, things are pretty advanced. Don\u2019t rely on your pet not eating to clue you in to a problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When You Need the Vet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding when you need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/staff\/our-veterinarians.html\">our veterinarian<\/a>s involved in your pet\u2019s oral care is a little bit tricky. The reality is that your pet should be having their teeth examined at their annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/veterinary-services\/wellness-preventive-care.html\">wellness visits<\/a> so that we can stay ahead of pet dental problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most pets will be recommended to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-regular-pet-dental-check-ups\/\">regular anesthetized dental exams and cleanings<\/a> complete with X-rays nearly every year after the age of three to stay ahead of trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, though, pet dental issues can surface suddenly. Please let us know right away if your pet has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Suddenly and persistently foul breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty eating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swelling of the face or jaw<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bleeding or inflamed bums<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pawing at the mouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive drooling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bleeding from the mouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Behavioral changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pet dental problems can be painful and affect your pet\u2019s overall well-being.
