A dog in pain may have the strength to get up but hesitate because putting weight on a joint, muscle, or injured area hurts. A weak dog may want to stand but lack the strength or coordination to do so normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signs that pain may be contributing to your dog&#8217;s difficulty include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limping or favoring one leg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stiffness, especially after resting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yelping or flinching when touched<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reluctance to climb stairs, jump, or exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes in posture or gait<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dog weakness may look somewhat different. You might notice trembling legs, stumbling, swaying, dragging the feet, or difficulty supporting the body. In some cases, a dog may repeatedly try to rise without succeeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These distinctions aren&#8217;t always clear-cut. Muscle strains, ligament injuries, spinal problems, and trauma can also interfere with comfortable movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weakness may be associated with problems affecting the muscles, nerves, spine, or other body systems. Illness can sometimes leave a dog generally weak or lethargic as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why observing <em>how<\/em> your dog is struggling can be helpful, but it can&#8217;t replace a veterinary examination. Your veterinarian may assess your dog&#8217;s gait, joints, muscles, reflexes, and overall health. Depending on the findings, bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasound, or other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/veterinary-services\/advanced-diagnostics.html\">diagnostic testing<\/a> may be recommended to help identify the underlying cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Is a Dog Unable To Get Up Considered an Emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A gradual change in mobility deserves veterinary attention, but sudden or severe changes can be more urgent. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog is unable to get up, suddenly loses the use of one or more legs, collapses, appears to be in significant pain, or develops other concerning symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other warning signs may include difficulty breathing, pale gums, vomiting, extreme lethargy, loss of coordination, or a recent injury.
