Sometimes, it\u2019s obvious, but in so many cases, the signs can be subtle and easy to miss. Understanding what constitutes a pet emergency is key when it comes to staying calm and acting quickly in times of trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warning Signs of a Pet Emergency<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some situations are always considered a pet emergency, no matter what time of day or night they may occur. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Breathing problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Any type of breathing difficulty, including choking or coughing uncontrollably, warrants an immediate trip to the veterinarian.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Wounds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Bring your pet in for any type of bleeding from the nose or mouth or any bleeding that doesn\u2019t stop within a few minutes.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Trauma <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Examples of trauma include being hit by a car, attacked by another animal (even if not bitten), or falling from any height. Even if there are no visible injuries, internal bleeding and trauma can quickly become life threatening.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Eye injuries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Eye injuries can be extremely serious. Bring your pet in right away if you notice bleeding, swelling, or discharge around the eye.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Elimination difficulties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Straining or inability to urinate or defecate, including not doing either for more than 12 hours, can be a sign of intestinal blockage or other medical emergency.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Severe vomiting\/diarrhea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Your pet should be seen by us if they\u2019re vomiting, have diarrhea several times a day, or if these symptoms are accompanied by fever or lethargy.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Signs of pain include limping, favoring one side, hunched over stance, difficulty standing or walking, extreme anxiety, and disorientation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Loss of appetite\/thirst<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Refusing to eat or drink for longer than 24 hours is a sign of health problems.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Fever<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Your pet should be seen by a veterinarian if they have a rectal temperature greater than 103 degrees Fahrenheit. <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Issues during labor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 If a pet in labor has gone several hours without delivering a puppy or kitten, seek medical attention.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attending all of your pet\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/but-doc-are-all-these-tests-necessary-explaining-the-importance-of-routine-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regularly scheduled wellness exams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help us diagnose and treat any problems early on, which decreases the likelihood of a pet emergency in the future!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next Steps<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always use caution when handling your pet during an emergency. Even calm, friendly pets may bite or scratch when they\u2019re sick or in pain, so it\u2019s important to be gentle and to never compromise your own safety.
