It\u2019s fun to celebrate the season with our best fur pals, but sometimes the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can leave room for a pet accident or injury, and land us in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/keeping-pets-safe-during-emergencies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clinic \u2013 the last thing anyone wants. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let\u2019s spend a moment talking about how to have a safe and fun holiday with your pet! &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holiday Pet Safety <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holiday pet safety hinges on three things: awareness, attentiveness, and prevention. When you know what could get your pet into trouble, it\u2019s much more likely that you\u2019ll be aware and take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/but-doc-are-all-these-tests-necessary-explaining-the-importance-of-routine-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">necessary steps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prevent any mishaps. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decorations and Disasters<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The holiday season wouldn\u2019t be the same without all the traditional and beautiful items we decorate our homes with. Whether from the glowing candles of a Menorah, a sparkling Christmas tree, or a living room full of poinsettias, holiday decorations are lovely and time honored. They can also spark our pet\u2019s natural curiosity, ending in disaster. Here\u2019s what to watch out for when it comes to our pets. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christmas tree and tree water<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinsel and ribbon<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lit candles<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strings of lights<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass or breakable ornaments<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holiday plants<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping all these things out of your pet\u2019s reach may be a tall order, so get creative with supervision. And, you can add more pet friendly holiday decor; think battery powered candles, faux plants, or a lovely artificial tree. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dining Dangers<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to holiday food, nothing makes our mouth water more, and you can bet that your pet\u2019s mouth is watering, too! But animals do not generally tolerate fatty, rich, and salty &nbsp;foods well, and the result of overindulgence can be GI upset, a foreign body obstruction or even a serious and painful inflammation of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t think you\u2019re doing your pet any favors by letting her go hog wild on the holiday (even if you do). Instead, we\u2019ll give you some great options for sharing the food-related fun with her, safely: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dollop of plain mashed or sweet potatoes (skip the cream, sugar, butter, salt, and marshmallows)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooked plain green beans, Brussels sprouts, or carrots<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small piece of lean white turkey meat<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresh apple pieces (small enough not to choke on)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not aware of the holiday food \u201cdon&#8217;ts\u201d for pets, here\u2019s an important list. Your pet should avoid:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeasted bread dough<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macadamia nuts<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapes, raisins<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chives, onions, and garlic<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dairy (milk, cream, whipped cream)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, keep these food related items out of reach of your pet:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unattended leftovers<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poultry or other meat string, aluminum foil, and food wrappers<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garbage and compost<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Table scraps, including poultry skin, fatty parts, and gravy<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bones of any kind<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Xylitol <\/strong>&#8211; <strong>Fatal Toxin for Dogs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xylitol <\/a>is an urgent hazard because it is incredibly common and highly toxic to dogs. Ingesting even a small amount can be fatal, rapidly causing dangerous blood sugar drops and potentially leading to liver failure. Check the ingredients on <strong>everything<\/strong> that enters your home\u2014especially human treats, chewing gum, and peanut butter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers often complicate safety by using these different names for Xylitol on packaging. Be sure to look out for the following terms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Birch sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birch bark extract<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birch sap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sugar alcohol (Though there are safer types of sugar alcohols, Xylitol is the most dangerous kind for dogs.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holiday Parties<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parties and gathering with family and friends are all part of the holiday season. You want to include your furry family, of course, but is it right for them?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most pets don\u2019t love a crowd, and strangers, activity, and any change in routine can cause them anxiety and stress and cause undesirable behaviors. Other pets are more social, and so it\u2019s wise to pay attention to the individual needs of your pets.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re going out, leave your pet at home rather than expose them to a crowd of strangers and unfamiliar surroundings. Pets should never be left unattended in a car, especially in the cold Auburn winter.
