Fenced-in yards, microchipping, vaccinations, and parasite preventives top the list of ways to keep our companions safe and sound. However, even the most cautious owner can overlook potential sources of pet poisoning that may be found in or around the home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March is National Pet Poison Awareness Month, and our goal is to raise awareness about common pet poisons that may be lurking right under your nose!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Poisons in the Home<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be surprising to discover how many food items, cleaners, plants, and other household goods are potential pet poisons. Make sure your pet doesn\u2019t have access to any of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People food, including chocolate, alcohol, grapes\/raisins, macadamia nuts, and fatty meats<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything containing the sugar substitute xylitol (commonly found in sugar-free items like gum, candy, baked goods, peanut butter, toothpaste, etc.)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garbage and food scraps<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription and over-the-counter medications, including acetaminophen, anti-inflammatories, ADHD medication, antidepressants, birth control pills, thyroid medications, sleep aides, asthma inhalers, and more<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet medications (many are designed to taste appealing to pets)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Household cleaners and other chemicals<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal care items<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House plants such as lilies (extremely toxic to cats), aloe, English ivy, and philodendrons<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backpacks, purses, and coats may contain leftover food, wrappers, medications, or other potential pet poisons. Keep these hung up or otherwise out of reach of curious pets. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A Word About Antifreeze<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antifreeze is the most toxic compound your pet is likely to encounter in the garage or on the street. Ethylene glycol, the main component of antifreeze, has a sweet odor and taste that many pets find irresistable. Even small amounts can be fatal. Extreme caution must be taken to ensure your pet doesn\u2019t come into contact with antifreeze or other automotive compounds:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean up antifreeze spills immediately.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep antifreeze containers tightly capped and stored out of your pet\u2019s reach.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switch to a less toxic version of antifreeze (look for products containing propylene glycol).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware when your pet is outdoors or on a walk; don\u2019t let them investigate any puddles on the street or in driveways. <\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yard and Garage<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/winter-pet-safety-tips-to-keep-your-pet-warm-and-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you prepare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your garage and yard for spring, secure or dispose of any pet poisons you come across, including:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodenticides, insecticides, herbicides, and other lawn and garden chemicals<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone meal, blood meal, fertilizer<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocoa mulch<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compost (may contain coffee grounds or other potential toxins)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bowmanvet.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman Veterinary Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we\u2019re equipped to handle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/is-there-a-pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a pet emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during regular business hours.
