Dirty ears aren\u2019t only uncomfortable, they also put your pet at risk for pain and infection. They may also be indicative of more serious issues.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ears are essential for hearing and balance, two of the main ways your pet navigates the world around them. Fortunately, pet ear care is simple, and you can make it part of your regular grooming routine with these tips and tricks for success. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Concerns<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear problems are among the most common reasons we see pets. Unlike humans (who tend to have middle ear problems), pets usually have problems in the external ear canal. Infection or inflammation of this area is known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">otitis externa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It may be caused by allergies or foreign body irritations (such as a foxtail awn), which can lead to yeast and bacterial overgrowth.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some indications that your pet is having ear trouble include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foul odor<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain when touched<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visible redness and\/or swelling inside the ear<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discharge from the ear<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head shaking or pawing at the ears<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holding the head or ear in an unusual position<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning and inspecting your pet\u2019s ears on a regular basis can go a long way toward preventing or mitigating problems.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Ear Care<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many pet owners are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/is-there-a-pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">understandably concerned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about cleaning their pet\u2019s ears, but rest assured this simple procedure is easy to learn. Before you begin, it\u2019s important to gather the proper supplies:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear wash (don\u2019t use rubbing alcohol &#8211; ask us for recommendations!)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cotton balls<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cotton-tipped swabs<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-lit workspace<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, it\u2019s time for the fun part!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Step one<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Thoroughly inspect your dog\u2019s ears for any signs of infection or trouble. Make note of any redness, discharge, or other issues before cleaning.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Step two<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Flush the ears one at a time with cleaning solution. Insert the tip of the bottle a few millimeters into the ear, and gently squeeze a small amount of solution into the canal.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Step three<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Allow your dog to shake, then gently massage the base of the ear to move the solution around inside.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Step four<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Use cotton balls to remove debris from the outer part of the canal. Cotton swabs may be used around the outside crevices, just be sure not to stick the swab too far inside, as this may cause wax to become impacted inside the ear.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend weekly ear cleanings for most dogs, although some will need more frequent cleanings.
