This feline population boom fills animal shelters with healthy kittens who all need loving homes, and has prompted Animal Humane to designate June \u2018Adopt a Cat Month\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that, your team at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bowmanvet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is celebrating cats and cat care, and encouraging our pet loving friends to consider adopting a cat! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adopting a Cat<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re thinking of adopting a cat, here are a few helpful tips to consider. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Make sure everyone in your home is on board \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Adopting a new cat should be a family affair, from deciding to welcome a new cat to going to the shelter together to select the perfect fit. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Stock up on supplies \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Help your new cat feel at home right away by getting all the things you need before the cat comes home. Your new cat will need:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food bowls and water bowls<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A litter box<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat litter<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat food<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scratching posts<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe and stimulating toys<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A perch or cat tree<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cushy bed<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nail trimmers<\/span><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/category\/pet-dental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tooth brush<\/span><\/a><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A grooming brush<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Cat proof your home \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cats can and will get into things you\u2019ve never imagined. Some plants, cleaning supplies, and essential oils can be very <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/common-pet-poisons-threats-to-your-pets-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic to cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so make sure all potentially dangerous items are stored safely out of reach. Kitties also love to explore, so it may be smart to remove valuable items until you and your new cat get the lay of the land, so to speak.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Go slow \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It may take a new cat or kitten several weeks to acclimate to new surroundings. Give her plenty of space to hide if she wants to. A great idea is to give her a secluded space of &nbsp;her own in order to build confidence, and let her gradually have the run of the house as you both learn the limits. A single room with all her necessities is perfect, especially if you have other pets. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Take the long view <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 When considering adopting a cat, it\u2019s important to realize that cats can live up to 20 plus years, with proper care and a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you have the financial resources to care for a cat for their life, and that veterinary care, housing, and possibly pet insurance are all a part of that plan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Schedule a veterinary visit \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In order to make sure your newly adopted cat is healthy and stays that way, come see us within 48 hours of adopting a new cat. Most shelters provide spaying or neutering, vaccinations, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/safe-and-sound-the-importance-of-pet-microchipping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">microchipping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/back-to-basics-flea-tick-and-heartworm-prevention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parasite prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinary exam will give you a chance to ask any questions about your new cat and form a plan for continued <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/the-cats-meow-cat-health-and-preventive-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventive care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
