Forever shining brightly in the constellation Canis Major (Big Dog), Sirius was perceived by ancient people as bringing about the hottest temperatures of the year, giving way to the famous expression \u201cthe dog days of summer\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What this means for your dog is probably more fun and games played outside. Without an approach to their safety and wellbeing, however, they could wind up getting sick or injured this summer. But not on our watch!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting Acclimated<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people begin to step up their summer game around the Fourth of July. We recommend slowly acclimating your pet to any new routine. For example, if you\u2019ve decided to start running every day:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure they\u2019re up for it (any weight gain from last winter can make a pet more susceptible to injury)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only go out at dawn or dusk<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure that the pavement is never too hot for their delicate paw pads<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they demonstrate they\u2019re ready, you can move from a speed walk to a jog, or go for longer periods of time.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simple Needs<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water and shade are going to be your pet\u2019s other best friends this summer, and they should always have access to plenty of both. The Dog Days of Summer suggests that scorching temperatures make it challenging to get anything done. It can be hard to simply hang out during the day, but the risk of heatstroke is very real for pets.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat Safety<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since dogs don\u2019t sweat like we do to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/winter-pet-safety-tips-to-keep-your-pet-warm-and-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cool down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll notice them panting more during hot weather. Excessive panting is a common symptom of heatstroke, as well as:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drooling<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevated internal temperature above 103 degrees<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reddened gums<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydration (pinch their skin by the shoulder blades to see if it returns quickly to it\u2019s normal spot. If it takes time, they\u2019re in need of hydration)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid heart rate<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heatstroke can be a life-threatening illness, especially for senior dogs . Please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/#contact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call us for help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be Flexible<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some dogs won\u2019t comply with their owner\u2019s demands for indoor play time. As long as they are in a shady area with lots of water, they may enjoy extra time out back.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install a fan to cool them down<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a close eye on them (don\u2019t leave them alone outside while you\u2019re gone)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refill water bowls with cool, clean water<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer nutritious frozen pet treats<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog Days of Summer Recreation<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We encourage you to keep pet safety a priority in these ways when experiencing the great outdoors this summer:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invest in a pet first aid kit that can be easily carried\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always have an extra collar, Set of ID tags, and leash as a backup (it\u2019s not a good idea to allow your dog to run off-leash in areas where they might run into various wildlife)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra waste removal bags always come in handy<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purchase a snug-fitting doggie life jacket for them to wear anytime you\u2019re on or near water, and always have extra towels<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not leave your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/common-pet-poisons-threats-to-your-pets-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog unattended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at campsites or when swimming<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give them opportunities to use their obedience skills (commands like sit, stay, down, leave it, and more can make the dog days of summer more fun and safe for everyone!)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Else?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dog Days of Summer provide a great opportunity to remind all pet owners of the importance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/safe-and-sound-the-importance-of-pet-microchipping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">microchips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vaccinations, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/back-to-basics-flea-tick-and-heartworm-prevention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parasite prevention medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re concerned that your pup isn\u2019t enjoying the season as much as they used to, please let us know. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/staff\/our-veterinarians.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bowmanvet.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman Veterinary Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t want them to miss out on all the fun!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The star that rises and sets with the sun during the high summer is known as Sirius, or the Dog Star.
