As this is clearly not the case for the vast majority of us, the daily leashed walk has become an important part of dog ownership.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retractable leashes may seem like a good choice for an owner who wants to give their dog a sense of freedom, but the risks involved with this type of leash are considerable.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retractable Leashes<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retractable leashes aren\u2019t really leashes at all, rather they are comprised of a thin, nylon cord which is wrapped around a spring-loaded device.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The device is housed inside a plastic handle and is operated by a button that can either release or lock the leash into place. Some retractable leashes extend up to 25 feet in length.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risks to Pets<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that retractable leashes allow dogs to get much farther away from their owners than standard leashes is a big part of why they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/xyli-what-pets-and-dangers-of-xylitol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some of the risks include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darting out suddenly in front of cars, bicyclists, or unfamiliar dogs.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entanglement that could cause strangulation or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/is-there-a-pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious injuries <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the legs, paws, tail, or nose.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neck injury as a result of a sudden stop when the end of the leash is reached too quickly or the owner stops the leash extension suddenly.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting lost or running into a dangerous situation if the thin cord breaks or the handle is dropped.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risks to Pet Owners<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As if the risks to dogs aren\u2019t bad enough, dog owners themselves could be seriously injured as a result of using a retractable leash, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rope burns, cuts, or lacerations from a finger, hand, or leg getting caught in the leash as your pet unexpectedly darts off.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye injuries, broken teeth, or bloodied nose if the leash or hook breaks and the handle bounces back into your face.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious injury to pedestrians or bicyclists if the leash does not retract or your pet gets tangled up around someone else.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have even been cases of a person losing a finger due to a retractable leash wrapping quickly around the appendage and being pulled suddenly by a strong dog!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retractable Leash Safety<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the apparent ease of use and freedom offered by retractable leashes, your team at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bowmanvet.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman Veterinary Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommend using a sturdy, 4-6\u2019 leash at all times.
