If you\u2019ve lived in California long enough, you have probably either encountered a snake or know someone who has. Dogs are at particular risk for rattlesnake bites due to investigating grasses, shrubs, and other prime rattlesnake habitat with their noses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, the staff at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bowmanvet.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman Veterinary Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treats dogs that have been bitten by rattlesnakes. Protecting your pet means understanding their risks, preventing encounters whenever possible, and working with us to determine if the rattlesnake vaccine is appropriate for your pet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the Rattlesnake Vaccine Right for Your Dog?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, dogs with a high likelihood of encountering rattlesnakes should be vaccinated. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs that regularly accompany their owners while hiking, camping, or hunting, or that generally spend a lot of time outdoors.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs with a high prey drive who may not heed their owner\u2019s warning of a snake.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smaller dogs (they may be less able to deal with the effects of a bite).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puppies over 4 months old (puppies are curious and may not be fully trained yet).<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puppies under 4 months of age cannot be vaccinated against rattlesnake venom, so be sure to take extra precautions when it comes to time outdoors. Always supervise them while outdoors, and keep them away from areas where snakes may be hiding, such as tall grass, brush, or woodpiles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the Rattlesnake Vaccine<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you understand the basics of the rattlesnake vaccine before taking the plunge:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rattlesnake vaccine works by stimulating your pet\u2019s immune system to create antibodies to the proteins in venom.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although vaccinated pets still need <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/is-there-a-pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency medical attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they\u2019ve been bitten, having the rattlesnake vaccine can significantly improve their chances for a full recovery.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine can be administered as early as 4 months of age.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your pet will need a booster about one month after the initial shot.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rattlesnake vaccine should be given annually, ideally about one month before the start of snake season.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having your pet vaccinated against rattlesnake venom is a great compliment to other precautionary measures, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/taking-the-lead-the-dangers-of-retractable-leashes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keeping dogs leashed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and on-trail at all times, not allowing them to investigate wildlife, and snake-proofing your property whenever possible.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information, or to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/why-pet-wellness-care-matters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set up an appointment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your pet, don\u2019t hesitate to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/#contact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact our staff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rattlesnakes are nothing to sneeze at.
