While at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bowmanvet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowman Veterinary Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we don\u2019t necessarily think we need to wait a whole year to celebrate your kitty, it\u2019s a nice excuse to spoil her rotten! So what can you do to help make sure you have a happy healthy cat in September and beyond?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping Your Cat Healthy<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in good health makes us all happier. Cats have basic medical and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/the-cats-meow-cat-health-and-preventive-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventative care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needs that we need to meet. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellness examinations at least annually so that we can check in on your cat periodically and address your questions and concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccinations to protect you pet from diseases like rabies that are a risk even to indoor pets.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite prevention such as flea and heartworm prevention to stop infection with detrimental parasites.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spaying\/neutering to help prevent unwanted pregnancies and decrease the risk of serious health issues.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microchipping to help reunite your pet with you should you ever become separated.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dental care including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/brush-up-on-the-basics-the-need-for-a-pet-dental-exam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">routine anesthetized oral exams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cleanings to support overall health and wellbeing.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know your cat best. If you notice changes such as behavior differences or alterations in eating, drinking, or little box habits it is important to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/#contact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">give us a call<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> right away. Seemingly small changes can indicate big problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty Stressors<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a cat can be difficult. As a species they tend to be solitary outdoor hunters. That\u2019s all over when we bring them indoors and ask them to integrate into our pack. There are many sources of stress in a cat\u2019s day-to-day life, including:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other pets or animals in the home<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in the people or animals in the house<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deviations from normal routines<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noises in or outside the home<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alterations in activities inside or outside of the home<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats visible outside of the home<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rearranging the furniture or hosting a get-together may not seem like a big deal to you or I, but these types of things can be very disruptive to our feline friends.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Happy Healthy Cat<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping a happy healthy cat goes beyond coming in to see us. As a proactive pet owner you have a responsibility to your pet to create a stress-free, engaging environment. Easy things that you can do include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Encouraging movement \u2014 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats need to exercise and move around just like we do. Indoor cats in particular may need a little push to make this happen. Encourage your pet to move around for five three minute sessions a day. You may need to get out the catnip, invest in a laser pointer, or find the perfect feather lure to encourage your pet. If you are feeling especially creative, creating a kitty obstacle course can also be a fun activity for both of you.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Bring the outside in \u2014 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats are natural hunters and typically very in tune with their environment. Allow them access to a secure window so that they can observe nature. You might even want to place a bird feeder outside for them to enjoy. A fish tank or cat friendly plants like cat grass or catnip can also help them enjoy nature safely from indoors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Provide vertical space \u2014 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats love to observe their world from all angles and tend to appreciate access to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventurecats.org\/indoor-adventures\/simple-ways-add-feline-friendly-vertical-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vertical space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Climbing trees, cat shelves, or furniture that allows a bird\u2019s eye view are usually appreciated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Support normal behavior \u2014 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats do best when they are allowed to be cats. Do not force them to interact with other pets. Provide plenty of food, water, scratching, and litter boxes so that they don\u2019t need to share unless they want to. Provide multiple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indoorpet.osu.edu\/\/cats\/basicneeds\/scratching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scratching surfaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that your cat can stretch out and keep their claws healthy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Be your cat\u2019s best friend \u2014 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are the only one that can advocate for your cat. Make an effort to provide you pet with the social interaction that we all need to thrive. Be it a snuggle session on the couch, a grooming session, or playing with a favorite toy, your cat wants to be with you.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a cat can be hard, but a dedicated pet owner can make all the difference.
