The good news is that it\u2019s not only possible to provide a pet-safe garden for your furry friend, when they have a variety of plants and flowers around them they are likely to be at their happiest.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Precautionary Tale<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true that a garden can be equally safe and beautiful. You don\u2019t have to forego any luscious colors or scents on your pet\u2019s behalf, but you do need to be a bit choosier when it comes to your plantings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular species like rhododendrons, azaleas, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and oleander top the list of poisonous plants for our four-legged friends. Be on the lookout for any vomiting, upset tummy, diarrhea, seizures, or other obvious symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/common-pet-poisons-threats-to-your-pets-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planting a Pet-Safe Garden<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, there are plenty of non-toxic plants you can purchase that are considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants?field_non_toxicity_value%5B%5D=01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe for dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants?field_non_toxicity_value%5B%5D=01&amp;field_non_toxicity_value%5B%5D=02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe for cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well. Take a good look around your property for any species that were planted by previous residents. If you know or suspect that your pet got into something, try to find what they ate and save it &#8211; that way you\u2019ll have some to bring with you should your pet need <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/is-there-a-pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, .<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Dangers Out Back<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet owners should be aware that mulch, specifically cocoa mulch, is incredibly damaging if ingested by a pet. Opt for cedar or pine bark to line those landscaping beds instead, and be sure the mulch isn\u2019t sprayed with insecticide or pesticide.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of Chemicals<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, applying fertilizer or weed killer to the lawn and garden can have terrible consequences to your pet\u2019s health. Look for commercially available pet-safe garden products.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you have snails, rodents, or bugs, bait products contain high levels of toxic chemicals. If your pet eats the bait, or eats a critter that has eaten bait, they are at risk of being poisoned. Six-foot high fencing and gate systems are ideal.
