Snakes are instantly captivating (from a distance), but cats cannot help messing with them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many cats find it endlessly amusing to swat at and pounce on them, and their super special owners are \u201clucky\u201d to get a snake trophy from time to time. It might seem impossible to train cats to distinguish venomous snakes from harmless ones. A better strategy would be to reduce (or eliminate) any snake encounters.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how can you keep your cat safe from snakes?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoors, Can Be a Fine Place<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor-only cats are known to be at a significantly decreased risk for accidental injury or illness. They don\u2019t get into fights with stray cats or wandering dogs, they don\u2019t wander into traffic, and they don\u2019t get stuck up trees. Furthermore, they are more protected from contagious diseases and parasites.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this is to say that the most effective way to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/best-practices-to-keep-your-pet-safe-from-snakes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep your cat safe from snakes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to keep them (the cats, not the snakes!) inside the house. It doesn\u2019t have to be a punishment! Install a cool catio in the yard, or take advantage of your home\u2019s vertical space with neat cat platforms, hammocks, or bridges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Tour of Training<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clicker training your cat to avoid snakes and snake habitats may be a compromise in order for your cat to have outdoor access. It may take some time, but training them can drastically reduce their curiosity and exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going another step further, you can train your cat to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hunt for snakes. We may not always be able to keep every snake out of our yards, but if your cat actively hunts them they could be asking for trouble. Even dead snakes can pose a risk, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2018\/06\/texas-man-bit-decapitated-rattlesnake-venom-animals\/#:~:text=This%20story%20is%20perhaps%20not,for%20their%20venom%20to%20work.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their bite reflex remains hours after death!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If a cat knows to avoid all snakes, alive or dead, you are protecting them from possible bites.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Next Step<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accidents happen, a fact of life that pet owners know well. To keep your cat safe from snakes on and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/creating-and-maintaining-a-pet-safe-garden\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around your property<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remove items that attract them. Large rocks, wood piles, fallen logs, overgrown grass and shrubbery can all shelter snakes. Clean up fallen bird seed and garbage that attracts rodents and, in turn, snakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, taking steps to seal up your house can limit a snake\u2019s ability to slither into your crawl space or right through a ground floor doorway (stranger things have happened!).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acting Quickly<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat experiences a snake bite, it\u2019s crucial to act quickly. It is best to assume that they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/blog\/the-rattlesnake-vaccine-should-your-pet-be-protected\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received a venomous bite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even though it&#8217;s possible they suffered a scare and a dry bite instead. All snake bites should be examined and treated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspect the bite site, and try to keep it lower than the heart to minimize the venom from hitting the bloodstream all at once. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowmanvet.com\/veterinary-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek immediate veterinary care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the bite, and whether or not venom is present, your cat\u2019s outcome is directly related to how soon they get help.
